UNITE HERE local 1 announced two new endorsements in the run-off elections for Chicago City Council. In a press release, the union stated its support for Ald. Willie Cochran (20th Ward) and John Arena, who is running in the open 45th Ward. Che "Rhymefest" Smith is challenging Cochran, while Arena faces John Garrido. The release said the group supports "candidates who have shown leadership on issues important to its members in the hospitality industry, such as a living wage for airport workers, support for area Hyatt and Congress Hotel boycotts, and the creation of good jobs in public venues like the public schools and McCormick Place."
Candidates who UNITE HERE endorsed in the first round of voting and continues to support include: Freddrenna Lyle (6th), Toni Foulkes (15th), Joann Thompson (16th), John Rice (36th), Tim Cullerton (38th), and Debra Silverstein (50th).
