The Governor's office announced Friday that Pat Quinn approved clemency for 85 individuals, while denying 189 petitions, in a move that helps clear a lengthy, 2,500-case backlog.

Since becoming governor, Quinn has acted on 1,195 petitions. Each person awarded clemency has undergone a background check by the Illinois State Police.
