Illinois beach water ranked among the worst in a study by the Natural Resources Defense Council. The report, Testing the Waters 2011, put Illinois water quality at 26th out of 31 states surrounding the Great Lakes and the East and West coasts. Of the state's 61 beaches, Winnetka had some of the worst of the worst, as did South Side beaches in the city.
