Yet another court ruling will allow Catholic Charities to take on new foster care cases as the state's battle with the religious group continues. The state decided not to renew a contract with Catholic Charities this month due to its refusal to place children with gay families united under the state's new civil unions law.
A Sangamon County judge in Springfield then issued a temporary order that allowed them to keep serving foster children until a legal decision was made and under the caveat that they could not take on new cases. Some 2,500 children could be displaced if the foster care and adoption contracts are not renewed with Catholic Charities. The state and charity will meet again in court on Aug. 15.
