The city's fire commissioner has decided to terminate four of the 54 firefighters accused of padding their travel reimbursement reports. The city's inspector general, Joe Ferguson, recommended that all of the firefighters be fired, but, according to the Sun-Times, a source close to Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff said he "“didn’t think termination was warranted or appropriate for a bulk of the people.”
As for the remaining 50 firefighters, six have retired, 43 are facing 30- to 60-day suspensions, and the punishment for one is still pending. The fraudulent actions of which the firefighters are accused has cost the city more than $100,000.
