U.S. Reps. Jan Schakowsky, Luis V. Gutierrez, and Mike Quigley will hold a hearing on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The meeting is meant to unveil the impact of the piece of legislation on same-sex couples and their families as well as look into its constitutionality and pending legal action taken against the act. DOMA denies federal benefits to same-sex couples and defines legal marriage as being between a man and a woman.
Chicago Ald. James Cappleman (46th), who has been with his partner for 20 years, will testify at the hearing as well as four same-sex couples and two legal experts. The hearing is scheduled to take place this Friday at 10 a.m. at Chicago's city hall.
