Emily's List has announced its endorsement of Cheri Bustos in the 17th congressional district race. Bustos, a former journalist, recently stepped down from her post as an East Moline alderman and has also worked as vice president of public affairs and communications for the Iowa Health System. The 17th district is currently being represented by freshman congressman and Tea Partyer Bobby Schilling (R-17), who is expected to run for a second term.
“Cheri Bustos is a smart dedicated leader who will fight back against the radical war on women the Republicans are waging in Washington. We need her voice and her tenacity in Congress and we couldn’t be more thrilled to endorse her today,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List. “Cheri has a strong track record in local government and a record of creating real change. She’s a proven fighter for the needs of the middle class, for more government transparency and bringing back much needed industry and jobs. Cheri will be a real advocate for the women and families of Illinois who aren’t being served by Bobby Schilling and his Tea Party agenda."
The race for the Democratic nomination in the district is crowded with several announced candidates, including Peoria State Sen. Dave Koehler; Director of Multicultural Services at Augustana College Greg Aguilar; Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp; former East Moline State Rep. Mike Boland; and immigration attorney Eric Reyes.
