Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle's budget proposal, set to be revealed on Tuesday, reportedly calls for luxury taxes, increased fees and layoffs. Preckwinkle is looking to close a $316 million budget shortfall. Her proposed budget is expected to call for an increase in the alcohol tax, expansion of the cigarette tax to include other tobacco products, additional parking fees at county buildings, and a new tax for those living in incorporated areas in order to pay for police protection.
Preckwinkle's budget proposal could also call for more than 1,000 layoffs; although about 500 could be reportedly averted if an agreement can be reached on furlough days for employees.
