The Illinois legislature has voted to override Gov. Pat Quinn's veto of the ComEd bill to the disappointment of the governor.
“The consumers of Illinois are deeply disappointed in the General Assembly’s action today to give Commonwealth Edison and Ameren guaranteed annual rate increases for each of the next 10 years… and so am I,” Quinn said, according to the Sun-Times. “The fight for consumers against unfair utility practices will go on and will never end as long as I am governor.”
The Senate voted 36-19, with two voting "present", while the House voted 74-42 to override Quinn's veto. Legislators were reportedly prompted to vote in favor of the override after a trailer bill was passed that would increase the amount of money ComEd and Ameren can spend on smart-grid changes, reduce the amount of profits earned by the companies, and create a fund for those who need help paying their energy bill.
Illinois residents can expect to see their bills go up by $3 in order to help fund upgrades to the power grid.
