The Labor Department is reporting that employers advertised more jobs in September than they have in three years. According to the agency, 3.35 million job listings were posted in September, which was a 7 percent increase from August. The number of job openings posted in September was the highest since August 2008, which is just before the nation's economic problems got worse.
Because 14 million people are out of work, the Department reports that there are an average of 4.2 unemployed workers for each available position, which was better than August but is still above the 2-to-1 ratio economists say is the proper level for a strong economy.
In September, the economy added 158,000 jobs, while 80,000 positions were added in October.
