As the Occupy Chicago movement and University of Chicago students shut down a planned lecture for Monday night by Condoleeza Rice and Henry Paulson, U.S. Rep Adam Kinzinger's (R-11) constituents plan to protest a breakfast event with Rice scheduled for Tuesday morning. Rice is headlining a fundraiser breakfast for Kinzinger Tuesday morning at the Boilingbrook Golf Club, where unemployed residents in Kinzinger's district plan to protest along with members of Stand Up! Joliet.
"Rep. Kinzinger consistently refuses to meet with his unemployed constituents, and fails to support desperately needed job creation in his current district, focusing instead on raising money from corporate executives and power brokers in his campaign for a new district, saying he will run for re-election either in the 16th congressional district or the redrawn 11th depending on map redistricting," reads an announcement for the protest. "Tickets for tomorrow's event at the Bolingbrook Golf Club cost $250 for individuals, $1,000 for a VIP photo-op, and $2,500 for table sponsorship, according to Kinzinger's campaign -- an event of, by and for the 1%."
One frustrated unemployed resident of the 11th district says she is attending the protest because of the congressman's ongoing failure to respond to countless calls for increased communication and action on the jobs crisis plaguing her town of Joliet, which has a 15 percent unemployment rate.
"Rep. Kinzinger has been unwilling to meet with me," said Uylonda Dickerson. "I've been unemployed for almost a year. I've got a disabled child and can hardly put food on the table. This breakfast is for the 1%. Since we in the 99 percent can't get the congressman's time, we're going to make our presence felt at this VIP event."
