Gov. Pat Quinn signed off on legislation today that will prevent the closing of seven state institutions, saving about 1,900 jobs.
“After working closely with the General Assembly this veto session, we reached a bipartisan budget agreement that achieves the goal of keeping the seven state facilities slated for closure open throughout this fiscal year using existing state resources,” reads a statement from Quinn's office.
The $270 million package will keep seven facilities open, including three mental health centers, a prison, a youth detention center, and two facilities serving the developmentally disabled. Also saved are some of the funds cut from mental health and substance abuse programs, scholarships for needy students, and homeless shelters and burial services for the poor. The deal runs through the start of the next fiscal year, July 1.
