Springfield city workers in civil unions will soon be able to add their significant others to their health insurance plans. Reversing its decision from last month, Springfield's Joint Labor/Management Health Care Committee voted unanimously to extend the benefits to civil union spouses this morning.
The decision came after the committee received actuarial information showing that the benefits would likely only be used by six employees, costing an additional $67,000. That estimate is much lower than the $725,000 figure previously provided by an actuary assuming that 65 people would participate. Springfield Mayor Mike Houston says there will be no increase in premiums as a result of the decision.
The benefits will be available to civil union spouses starting March 1.
