Walker Recall Petitions Set To Be Filed In Wisconsin (UPDATED)

It appears as though organizers have collected more than enough signatures to push Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) into a recall election, according to reports. Organizers say they have much more than the 540,028 signatures needed to force Walker into a recall election and will turn them in today.

If the minimum number of required signatures is validated by the Government Accountability Board, Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefish will go up against a currently unknown Democratic candidate. Possible Democratic opponents for Walker include: Wisconsin Secretary of State Doug La Follette, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Wisc. State Sen. Jon Erpenbach, Dave Obey, a former congressman, and former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, according to Reuters.

The recall of Walker stems from his union-busting legislation that essentially stripped state workers of their collective bargaining rights. Two U.S. governors have successfully been recalled: Gray Davis from California back in 2003 and North Dakota Lynn Frazier in 1921.

UPDATE (5:18 p.m.): More than one million signatures were filed by Democrats looking to recall Gov. Walker. More here from Slate.
