Seven Illinois business groups, including the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, wrote a letter in protest of Gov. Pat Quinn's anticipated nomination of Chicago Ald. Joe Moore (49th) to run the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The group's cite Moore's executive inexperience. But the real issue appears to be the alderman's environmental and labor record. This includes Moore's support of the stalled Chicago Clean Power Ordinance, which would put stringent new regulations on Chicago's Fisk and Crawford coal-fired power plants.
The State Journal-Register reports that it's exceedingly rare for groups to step in and block an appointment before it is even made.
Moore, meanwhile, has been in Springfield to lobby senators on behalf of his possible nomination.
I'm not sure big business or the Chamber of Commerce has anything to worry about with Joe Moore at the ILEPA. As an Alderman he voted in favor of Mayor Daley's parking fiasco, for which he apologized to the 49th ward democratic organization; taking more lumps when Toni Preckwinkle appeared before the same group as an Alderman who didn't vote for privatized parking. Then, I sat in the City Council Chamber and watched Mr. Moore, along with 43 other Aldermen, rubber stamp Mayor God's desires on the "sit down and shut up" ordinance regarding the budget and parade restrictions for the NATO/G8 meetings next May. Mr. Moore doesn't disclose why he voted for these measures that are against the wishes of his constituents.
