Three weeks after he announced the closing of Tinley Park Mental Health Center and Jacksonville Developmental Center, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn told WBEZ that, "frankly there will be a few facility closures" by the end of the year. Quinn didn't specify what facilities would close but he did predict that "a couple of" youth prisons would shutter by the end of the year.
Illinois has been here before. Last year, Quinn announced the closure of seven state facilities only to reverse his decision at the end of the year and keep the facilities open until at least June 30 of this year. Meanwhile, some lawmakers and AFSCME, the union that represents public health care workers and other state employees, want more transparency from Quinn in how the governor decides what facilities to close.
