The U.S. Justice Department indicted Cook County Commissioner William Beavers yesterday for not paying taxes. One charge is that Beavers took more than $225,000 from three campaign funds he controls, didn't pay taxes on it, and used some money on himself. Beavers also allegedly didn't pay taxes on a county stipend and leveraged campaign funds to more than double his aldermanic pension.
Beavers, who served as 7th Ward alderman for 23 years and is invariably referred to as an "old school" patronage politician, was unapolgetic in an interview with the Tribune. In fact, Beavers says he was indicted because he wasn't a "stool pigeon" in a probe of fellow Commissioner John Daley, brother of former Mayor Richard Daley.
Prosecuting attorney Patrick Fitzgerald declined to respond to Beaver's counter-charge. Fitzgerald noted he can't comment on someone who is not charged with a crime.
