Midwest Generation's Fisk and Crawford coal-fired power plants are set to close as a result of a deal made with Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The Fisk plant, located in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood will close by December. The Crawford power plant, in the city's Little Village neighborhood, will close by the end of 2014, according to the Chicago Tribune. Midwest Generation had previously agreed to close the plants by 2018.
In exchange for closing the plants early, Midwest Generation will delay installing pollution controls at its Waukegan plant and Mayor Rahm Emanuel will curb the Clean Power Ordinance, which he delayed a vote on in April after becoming mayor so he could have input on the issue. A lawsuit by environmental groups will also be dropped against Midwest Generation under the deal.
