Protesters spent the weekend marching 31 miles from the South Side of Chicago to the south suburban village of Crete, to protest a civil immigrant detention center the Obama administration envisions for Crete. The protesters started in the heavily Latino neighborhood of Little Village.
Federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement is working with the Corrections Corporation of America, a private, for-profit operator of detention facilities and prisons, and Crete officials to build a 788-bed detention center. The center would hold Chicago-area undocumented immigrants slated for deportation or due for a deportation hearing. ICE has not finalized the center and there are efforts from Crete citizens, immigrant rights groups, as well as a bill in the General Assembly to head off the effort.
