The U.S. Secret Service and city of Chicago quietly announced at the end of Friday afternoon that Lake Shore Drive and the part of Interstate Highway 55 near McCormick Place convention center will be shut down for the NATO summit, May 20 and 21. These main routes to Chicago's downtown area will reopen for rush hour May 21. Roads around McCormick Place, which is just south of downtown Chicago and where most of the summit will take place, will also close Sunday, as will the Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and Field Museum.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel did address the closings Friday, stating, "I don't minimize that there will be inconvenience, but we're not the only city to have had forums. I think we're lucky to have this [the NATO summit]."
