The city of Chicago paid $3.3 million in settlements regarding lawsuits related to illegal police searches between January 2009 and November 2011, according to the Chicago Reporter. The perpetrators are often repeat offenders who conduct their unlawful searches in predominantly minority communities.
The Reporter investigation comes a week after the People's Law Office law firm released data that the city spent $63 million since 2003 defending police officers accused of misconduct.
