Effingham County Clerk Kerry Hirtzell and Tazwell County Clerk Christie Webb filed a request to defend Illinois' current ban on gay marriage, which ACLU and Lambda Legal legally challenged in Cook County Circuit Court. The request follows Cook County Clerk David Orr's refusal to defend the ban, due to his personal support for same-sex marriage. Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan also won't defend the marriage law.
The one group that will defend the ban is the Thomas More Society, a conservative public interest law firm in Chicago, which is now working with Hirtzell and Webb.
