Speaker of the House Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) sent a memo to all House members Friday that there will be a one-day, summer session on August 17 to vote on expelling State Rep. Derrick Smith (D-Chicago). A House committee voted Thursday to expel Smith, who is charged with accepting a bribe.
Unclear is whether the Illinois House will deal with anything else that day, namely major pension legislation after a bill to cut public employee pensions unraveled in May. The Associated Press reports that Senate President John Cullerton will not call the Senate back on August 17, which may hurt chances of the House doing sweeping pension legislation.
