Chicago Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) has made waves for trying to block a Chick-fil-A restaurant from setting up shop in his Northwest Side ward, because restaurant President Dan Cathy vocally opposes gay marriage and has donated money to anti-gay marriage groups. Whether Moreno can successfully block the store is unclear.
The Chicago City Council will probably back Moreno as aldermen typically have the privilege of accepting and rejecting new businesses in their ward. Also, many other aldermen, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, share Moreno's distaste for Cathy's anti-gay marriage views.
But Chick-fil-A could successfully sue on first amendment grounds. Ald. Danny Solis (25th), chairman of the Zoning Committee, suggested that Moreno say that traffic concerns are the official reason he's blocking the store, according to the Chicago Tribune.
