Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law yesterday legislation that bans employers from requesting that workers provide their passwords to social media sites such as Facebook. The legislation also prevents employers from asking job applicants for a password.

The legislation does not ban employers from simply "friending" prospective hires on the site and accessing personal information. But it does put an end to password requests made by some companies and government agencies.
