Illinois Judge Charles Cavaness issued a temporary restraining order today to prevent the state from closing seven corrections and juvenile justice facilities, including Tamms supermax prison.
AFSMCE Council 31 public employees union sued Gov. Pat Quinn to stop the closings, and an arbitrator ruled Friday that the state violated its contract with AFSCME by not negotiating the closing's impact. Arbitrator Steven Bierig gave Quinn and AFSCME 30 days to reach an agreement.
Tamms and Dwight women's prison were each originally scheduled to close August 31.
