August was another month of slow national job growth according to U.S. Labor Department numbers released today. The economy added 96,000 jobs in August, less than the 125,000 positions economists projected and less than the 141,000 jobs added in July. The unemployment rate dropped from 8.3 percent to 8.1 percent but only because more Americans gave up looking for jobs and were not counted as part of the national labor force.
