Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will present her 2013 budget today to the county board and is expected to include a $1 increase in the county cigarette tax. The increase would follow Gov. Pat Quinn signing into law this June a $1 statewide hike on smokes, revenue is meant helps pay Illinois' share of Medicaid costs.
If the board approves the proposal, Chicago residents would see a $6.67 tax on each pack of cigarettes when city, county and state levies are all factored in, according to the Chicago Tribune. The tax hike is projected to generate $25.6 million annually for the county. The yearly county budget is roughly $3 billion.
Why more tax on cigarettes? Why not tax gasoline more? We tax cigarettes to discourage use, taxing gasoline would reduce pollution, reduce cars on the streets making then safer for pedestrians, senior citizens, children.
Add $1/gallon (or more) tax on gasoline.
