Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office announced a settlement Monday with the owners and operators of a Madison County refinery over its alleged contamination of the Mississippi River.
Specifically, the settlement was reached with Phillips 66 Co., ConocoPhillips Co. and WRB Refining LP over alleged violations at the Roxana, Illinois-based Wood River Refinery, which "processes crude oils to produce gasoline, asphalt, petroleum coke and other products," the AG's office said in a news release.
The refinery is alleged to have discharged high levels of contaminants into the Mississippi River in violation of state and federal laws. Contaminants included "mercury and fecal coliform in the wastewater," Madigan's office said.
Under the consent order announced Monday, the refinery's owners and operators must install new pollution controls and pay a civil penalty of $125,000.
"This action will help ensure the refinery's operations do not further contaminate the Mississippi River and jeopardize the river's ecosystem," Madigan said.
