For the second time, a judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by parents on Chicago Local School Councils to undo Chicago Public Schools closings and so-called turnarounds. As he did in his first lawsuit dismissal in March, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Michael Hyman expressed sympathy with the plaintiffs, who contend CPS closed down schools and fired staff without first properly investing in the institutions. However, Hyman maintained that the Chicago Board of Education has ultimate authority to make decisions on school shut downs.
The lawsuit was one of several efforts by LSC activists, in collaboration with the Chicago Teachers Unions, to avert closings and turnarounds. The plaintiffs did not say if they would re-file the case.
