The first quarter congressional fundraising numbers have been released and Illinois incumbents, not surprisingly, are outraising their challengers. But in the open 10th District race, Democrat Dan Seals posted the highest fundraising total of any U.S. House candidate in the state.
Friday marked the deadline for first quarter campaign finance filings in Washington and we've compiled the data for the five most competitive U.S. House races in Illinois: the 8th, 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th districts.
The 10th Congressional District post is being vacated by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mark Kirk and is the only open seat in this bunch. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that it's attracting the most vigorous fundraising at this juncture. Together, Democrat Dan Seals and Republican Bob Dold raised a collective $1.1 million in the first three months of this year, more than in any other district. Seals himself brought in $634,000, making him the fundraising leader among Illinois U.S. House candidates during the first quarter.
In the other races, the incumbents are currently outpacing their rivals. Democrats Debbie Halvorson and Bill Foster, who face tough challenges in their suburban swing districts this year, both outraised their Republican opponents in the first quarter (by about $200,000 and $100,000 respectively). Rep. Melissa Bean tripled the amount brought in by Republican Joe Walsh in the 8th District. Meanwhile, incumbent GOP Rep. Judy Biggert did the worst of the incumbents, raising $166,000 to challenger Scott Harper's $128,000.
But as the cash-on-hand numbers below show, each incumbent has a significant lead going into the summer.
