Who has the cash to win Chicago's mayoral election? Our database, which we will update continuously throughout the campaign, includes all of the latest campaign finance data.
Who has the cash to win Chicago's mayoral race?
With just one month to go before Chicago voters head to the polls to select a new mayor, that question is on the minds of political junkies across the city. While a healthy campaign warchest is by no means the only indicator of political strength, it's certainly an important one, particularly in Chicago's expensive media market.
Today marks the deadline for state and local political candidates to disclose how much money they raised during the second half of 2010. We read through the available D-2 reports and compiled the most recent snapshot of the city's mayoral race. We will continue to update the table in the coming weeks as more data is reported. (It is worth keeping in mind that new campaign finance laws went into effect at the beginning of the year, so future donations will likely be smaller.) The first four columns on the graph below show each candidate's finances through December 31, 2010, including cash-on-hand, individual contributions, loans, and transfers. (The latter refers to the amount of money each candidate received from another political committee.) The last column you see on the right tallies up the candidates' A-1 filings (which disclose contributions over $500) so far in January. Check it out (you can view the full spreadsheet here):
We plan on adding to the spreadsheet, along with our "Supporters" list below, with any new information that becomes available. If you see anything that looks out of date, feel free to drop us an e-mail at contact (at) progressillinois.com.
