Crappy Carp News

There's not a lot of good news to share in the ongoing fight against Asian carp. Yesterday, Attorney General Lisa Madigan urged the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a ruling that would allow the Chicago-area to keep shipping locks open along the Mississippi River system. That's a decision derided by environmentalists, who point to new research showing carp DNA has already reached Lake Michigan.

Even worse, top carp experts think one expensive approach officials are taking now, in which they attempt to chase fish that have breached electric river barriers into large commercial fishing nets, won't work. "The chance that they will catch nothing," says Duane Chapman, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey who specializes in Asian carp, "even if a substantial number of fish are in the (canal system), is good."
