Daley's Double Standard

Back in January, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley railed against an effort in cash-strapped Oregon to raise the income tax on upper-income earners.  Then in late February, he advised Gov. Quinn to cut first before asking taxpayers to fork over more in income taxes.  Now the word is out that Quinn's proposed spending cuts will include a reduction in the amount of state tax revenue directed at municipalities.

And guess what?  Daley doesn't like those cuts.

But the mayor can't have his cake and eat it too.  If he needs that state support -- just like universities, hospitals, and social service providers need theirs -- he should get off the "cut first" bandwagon and have the courage to call for an immediate income tax increase.  Otherwise, he doesn't have the right to complain.
