The death of youth activist Damien Turner could have been avoided, some say, if the South Side hospital community was prepared to care for trauma patients. Turner, who co-founded community activist group Fearless Leading by the Youth (FLY), was killed eight months ago when a stray bullet hit him just three blocks away from the University of Chicago Medical Center; which wasn't prepared to handle his type of injury.
So he was instead shuttled almost 10 miles north to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died. Members of FLY and several area residents and community groups say the University of Chicago Medical Center has to reopen its Trauma Center, which was shuttered in 1988, because the area is completely lacking of a facility that can adequately care for trauma patients. They say the resulting "trauma desert" could be leading to the loss of life. FLY activists were set to meet with the University of Chicago Medical Center's new president, Sharon O'Keefe, on March 23, but the meeting was abruptly canceled the day before it was to take place. Instead of offering to reschedule the meeting with O'Keefe, FLY was presented with the chance to meet with the medical center's vice-president of marketing and communications later this month to discuss the issue of the area's "trauma desert". But Turner's sister, who is also a member of FLY, told Progress Illinois that the offer was not good enough.
The closing of the University of Chicago Medical Center's trauma ward was the beginning of the end of Level 1 adult trauma centers in an area that is battling gun violence. Community residents have had enough of the imbalance of care in their community when compared to others and have garnered the support of U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, who recently gave a speech to his fellow Congressmen in support of the call for a trauma center on Chicago's South Side.
Turner's friend, De'Andre Foster, who saw the victim shortly before the shooting and had plans to meet with him later that evening, says his best friend's slaying as well as his own experience as a shooting victim a few months later has motivated him to fight for a South Side trauma center. He says the requirement that only children be served in area trauma centers makes it appear as though the lives of adult residents in the area are expendable:

The University is not the County hospital. It cannot exist taking all of those Medicaid and uninsured patients. That is why Michelle Obama, when she was working there, came up with the plan to steer poor patients away to public health clinics. It was called the Urban Health Initiative.

Re: the story: you can protest all you want, but unless you can come up with the several million dollars it would take to re-establish and equip a new trauma unit PLUS another several million a year needed to staff and supply it 24/7/365 (in addition to another X million for an uncompensated care fund), that trauma unit will remain a figment of your imagination. U of C has all the money it used to spend on a trauma unit redirected toward regular patient care and research -- that's their mission now. Besides, like everything else, trauma care has only gotten more expensive since the med center closed its unit. So: where will *you* get the money??? Because U of C doesn't have that kind of money lying around, and this would be an ongoing expense with a huge initial investment.
