WalMart Planning Second Chicago North Side Store

WalMart has signed a lease for a second store in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. The more than 14,000 square-foot property is only five blocks away from Wrigley Field, so the convenience store-sized WalMart Express that is planned will be joining an already saturated market considering the nearby Walgreens, CVS, 7-Eleven, Whole Foods, and Jewel. The new establishment will be located just a mile north of the first highly-contested Lakeview WalMart Market, which is just about the same distance between the planned Express store and a new Target store to the north.

This time around, WalMart's infiltration into the area had been quiet, so much so that Alderman James Cappleman (46th) says he only heard about the plan last week from residents -- not the retailer, which he finds to be a bit problematic.

"One of my concerns is I'm just now finding out about it," Ald. Cappleman told Crain's. "I've been very clear from the very beginning that I'm an alderman that works with the chambers and community organizations. We need to hear from any interested business very quickly so we can make decisions about what's best for this community."

The alderman says he has meetings scheduled with the property owners of the building being rented by the retail giant as well as WalMart executives. Capplemen added that he plans on getting the opinions of those in neighborhood organizations and the local chamber of commerce when it comes to the planned WalMart Express. Meanwhile, WalMart execs say the Express store will be made to fit into the neighborhood's style and needs, adding that the retailer welcomes community input on the matter.

"We want each of our Chicago stores to be a reflection of the surrounding neighborhood, and think a Wal-Mart Express can offer Wrigleyville a convenient and affordable option for their grocery needs," a WalMart spokesman told Crain's in an e-mail. "We look forward to engaging with the alderman and community to listen to concerns, answer questions and share information about Wal-Mart and our newest format."

Great; just what we need.. another wal-mart...

As a member of the church that has been sitting on the corner next to this proposed site for over 120 years, I can assure you that no one has approached our leaders to discuss the possible impact this development may have on us. And given the shocked reaction of the new alderman, it seems apparent to me that Wal-Mart and the current building owner are trying to pull over a fast one on both the neighborhood and the city. I would politely suggest that the new Mayor get involved and slow thing down on this proposal, until everyone can weigh in on the possible impact, positive or negative.
