The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has called for a 17 percent increase in overall state aid, which amounts to about $847 million.
ISBE’s budget recommendation is in stark contrast from Gov. Pat Quinn’s budget proposal, which calls for more than $300 million in cuts to education funding.
“Across the state, districts are eliminating teachers and teachers’ aides, they’re expanding class size, eliminating extracurricular activities … (and) draining their reserves,” said Gery Chico, chairman of the ISBE board, to the State Journal-Register.
He said the organization is only receiving 89 percent of the $6,119 per-pupil-spending foundation level that was mandated in 2010, and is aiming to amend that.
“What we need from you is really the realistic figure and not the dream figure,” said State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) regarding ISBE’s budget plan in a House committee hearing Tuesday. ”I just don’t see that that’s going to happen.”
