Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, Sandi, will be sentenced July 3 for their crimes, and have recently added a former Blagojevich attorney to their defense team. Chicago attorney Carolyn Pelling Gurland, who was part of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's legal team, is one of the lawyers who will assist Sandi. Gurland called on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Thursday to let her appear on behalf of Sandi in court. Court filings show the couple has a team of eight attorneys, five for Jackson Jr. and three for Sandi, to represent them during sentencing.

Federal prosecutors said earlier this month recommended that Sandi serve 18 months and Jackson Jr. serve four years, also adding that both should pay restitution. Prosecutors recommended staggered terms in order to ensure that their children, ages 9 and 13, do not have both parents in prison at once.

Dan Webb, former U.S. attorney in Chicago, and Thomas Kirsch II of Winston & Strawn in Chicago are also on Sandi's defense team.

Reid Weingarten, Brian Heberlig, and William Drake of Steptoe & Johnson in Washington are assisting Jackson Jr. Charles Ogletree, a Harvard University law professor and Tricia "C.K." Hoffler, a lawyer from Atlanta lawyer, are also on his defense team. The two are both working for free.

Jackson resigned from office last November and pleaded guilty Feruary 20 for spending some $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items. Sandi, former 7th Ward Chicago alderman, also pleaded guilty in connection with misusing the campaign funds and failing to report about $600,000 of income on tax returns.
