Governor Pat Quinn has put a stop to funding for renovations at the state capitol following media scrutiny over the costs associated with the project. But the majority of the $50 million allocated to renovating the west wing have already been spent, according to the AP. Even still, Quinn says the architect, J. Richard Alsop III, needs to be "reined in" by the commission overseeing the project.
The project has come under fire for extravagant spending, including $670,000 copper-plated wooden doors and more than $323,000 being paid out for four chandeliers.
Democratic candidate for Illinois governor Bill Daley has called Quinn out for the high costs of the renovations, saying “Under Governor Quinn, thousands of teachers have been laid off, health care has been cut, yet he somehow approves over $1 million for fancy chandeliers and doors, and wastes $5 million a day failing to fix the pension mess.”
“The governor heads the board that approved these wasteful expenditures, so if the governor is not in charge, then who is running this state,” Daley asked in a press release.
Quinn spokeswoman Brooke Anderson said the governor does not have a say in the materials used for the project, according to the Chicago Tribune.
