CPS Won't Cut Budgets Of Under-Enrolled Schools

The Chicago Public Schools will not cut the budgets of schools with lower than expected student enrollment, according to an announcement from the district. The decision is only for this academic year, however. Schools with higher enrollment numbers than previously expected will see an increase in their school budgets.

"As a former principal and teacher, I believe principals — not the central office — should control how their education dollars are spent as they have the best understanding of how to meet the academic needs of their students," CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett explained in a written statement. "While this is the most fair and equitable way in which to deliver these precious dollars to our schools, I believe schools should have a year to transition to this new system. We will work closely with those principals during this time of transition to ensure they are prepared to fully implement Student-Based Budgeting in School Year 2014-2015."

CPS says the decision not to further cut school budgets comes after consideration of community and parental feedback.
