Ald. Willie Cochran (20th) says he is open to Gov. Pat Quinn's offer to deploy state police to Chicago to help stymie gang violence.
Quinn suggested the tactic following the mass shooting Thursday night in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, which left 13 people injured, including a 3-year-old boy. Two men were charged in connection with the shooting on Monday, although police believe neither acted as a triggerman. The investigation is still ongoing, police said.
Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy is opposed to Quinn's idea, saying on Monday, "No way. No how. It’s not an issue of resources.”
Though the South Side alderman said McCarthy's efforts to ramp up foot patrols and police presence in areas with high rates of violence has helped to reduce violent crime and murders so far this year, he stressed that more needs to be done to tackle the problem.
“Gov. Quinn’s proposal to supplement Chicago’s existing law enforcement efforts with Illinois State Police power has merit. The city has partnered with the Illinois State Police on countless joint task forces in the past. This would be noting unusual,” Cochran said in a statement.
“What it would be is an opportunity to get more officers on the criminal element. I’ve long called for increased patrols throughout the city as an essential part of an effective violence prevention strategy, but recognize law enforcement is but one component….I applaud Gov. Quinn for taking the initiative to offer Illinois State Police help to address safety in our city. Like the governor, I know we need to do more to prevent violence.”
UPDATED (8:48 a.m.): Two additional people were charged in connection with the shooting early Tuesday, including a 22-year-old man believed to be a gunman, police said.
