The Illinois House Finance and Revenue Committee did not vote on corporate tax breaks for Archer Daniels Midland Company and several other major corporations as planned Tuesday.
State Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion) took the bill's vote off the agenda, but they "are all under consideration," according to the Associated Press. There is no word, however, as to when, or if, the tax breaks will go up for a vote.
The We Are One Coalition released the following statement earlier today in response to the House's consideration of the bill, HB 380:
Big corporations and their lobbyists lining up for special deals in Springfield are out of touch with reality. Illinois is already struggling to pay its bills and invest in core public services.
It is particularly outrageous that some of the same CEOs who seek taxpayer handouts are also leading the charge to strip teachers, police, and other public employees and retirees of the modest pensions they paid for and earned.
Rather than breaking promises to middle-class public servants to pay for new corporate tax breaks, lawmakers should close wasteful, inefficient corporate loopholes and pay the state’s bills instead.
ADM told the AP they are still in talks with state officials about a corporate tax break, but did not mention any details. Last month, ADM officials said they were moving the company's headquarters from Decatur to a more internationally-acessible location, and want a tax break to stay in Illinois.
