It turns out Ames Middle School in Logan Square will not be the permanent home for Marine Math and Science Academy after all, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the mayor's office clarified Thursday.
Ames will, however, become a "Marine-affiliated school," CPS officials said.
As Progress Illinois reported, Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday announced controversial plans for the military high school to take over Ames next year.
But now the school district says Marine Math and Science Academy will stay at its current West Side location, 145 S. Campbell Ave., which it shares with Phoenix Military Academy.
Ames teachers and principals currently at the school will remain there, however other educators would come in to help with the military program and instruct the new grades that will be added to accommodate older students.
"Ames is changing its academic focus and increasing its capacity, while Marine Math and Science students have the opportunity to enroll at this school," mayoral spokeswoman Rachel Kruer told the Chicago Tribune.
Maria Trejo, with the Logan Square Neighborhood Alliance and an after-school program director at Ames, said parents are still confused as to what is going on with the school.
"We heard it's being taken over by Marine. It's unclear," she told the newspaper.
