House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH,8) is set to bring a "clean" debt-ceiling increase up a for vote in the House Tuesday night. Boehner told House Republicans in a private meeting earlier today that support had fizzled for an effort to attach the restoration of military pension cuts to the debt limit bill.
“It’s a disappointing moment, I can tell you that,” Boehner said at press conference following the morning meeting.
The vote is planned for Tuesday evening because lawmakers will be leaving the Capitol for almost two weeks on Wednesday. Treasury Department officials said the debt ceiling had to be increased by February 27 in order to prevent a default.
Boehner said he would be voting for a clean extension of the $17.2 trillion debt limit. According to a spokeswoman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA,7.), the representative will also support the bill.
In order for the measure to pass in the House, 16 Republicans will have to vote 'yes' along with all 201 Democrats, The Hill reported.
“The president has ... demanded a clean debt ceiling, and I think there will broad support within the Democratic Caucus for a clean debt ceiling,” said U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY,14), vice chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. “The numbers will speak for themselves. Obviously, if this bill is going to pass, it'll have to be done in a bipartisan way.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA,12) reiterated that House Democrats have said from the beginning that they would support a clean debt limit bill.
“That's what our position has always been, and the Speaker has been very gracious in his conversations with us as to see what we would vote for. And we told him we would vote for a clean [debt-ceiling increase],” Pelosi stated. “No matter who the president is and who controls the Congress, the full faith and credit of the United States of America is not negotiable.”
Conservative groups like the Club for Growth and Heritage Action are unhappy with Boehner's move. The Senate Conservatives Fund released a statement Tuesday calling for Boehner to be replaced.
UPDATE 1 (6:03 p.m.): The House voted 221-201 to raise the debt ceiling. Just 28 Republicans, including Illinois congressman Peter Roskam, voted for the deal to raise the debt ceiling until March 2015.
