Former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's ex-deputy chief-of-staff, Gene Lee, admitted to embezzling some $132,000 in charity donations made by corporations in 2007 and 2008. Lee said he cashed 161 charity checks meant to be used on Chinatown's annual summer fair and pocketed a portion of the funds. Lee reportedly cashed the checks at an unnamed Chinatown restaurant. The checks came from companies such as Home Depot, Comcast, Western Union, McDonald's, ComEd and Nielsen Media.
Lee plead guilty to tax fraud and embezzlement Tuesday for stealing some or all of the donations given to his personal charity, the Chicago Dragons, and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. Lee worked as an aide for Daley for several years.
The former Daley staffer is facing 13 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. Meanwhile, Lee's attorney says he is seeking probation for his client. Lee is scheduled to be sentenced in September.
