Americans are not on board with the militarization of local police departments, according to a new Huffington Post/YouGov poll.
More than half of those polled, 51 percent, found the use of armored trucks and military weapons to be unnecessary, while just 28 percent of respondents said there was a need for such intense weaponry.
For Democrats, the margin expanded when the poll was broken down by party, with 63 percent reporting to find police militarization unnecessary, while 21 percent saw a need for it. The margin narrowed amongst Republicans, with 44 percent supporting police militarization and 34 percent saying it goes too far.
The poll was conducted between August 16 and August 17. The poll of 1,000 respondents has a margin of error of 4 percent.
