A cost-cutting measure to dissolve Belleville Township was adopted by local board members Tuesday night.
The plan calls for the township to be dissolved on March 15, 2017.
In order for that to happen, the Belleville City Council has to agree to take control of the township's tasks. The city council has an August 1 deadline to approve such a measure.
The township, located in southern Illinois in St. Clair County, is responsible for providing aid, including rental assistance, to residents in need.
Belleville Township's dissolution could reportedly cut annual costs by $250,000, according to estimates from Trustee Michael Hagberg.
