Cook County might have to reduce programs and staff as a result of the state budget impasse, Board President Toni Preckwinkle told the Chicago Sun-Times editorial board Monday.
The state, now in its eighth month without a budget, owes the county approximately $66 million in late payments.
"If that continues, we're going to have to either skinny down programs or stop them and lay off people because we can't continue to carry the state because we don't have the cash reserves to do it," Preckwinkle said.
Cook County funds caught up in the Illinois budget battle include $18 million in federal and state grants for child support programming, Preckwinkle said.
