A state board is taking issue with the cost and size of the University of Chicago Medicine's expansion proposal.

As part of its $269 million "Get Care" project, U of C Medicine wants to create a Level 1 adult trauma center on the medical center's Hyde Park campus, relocate and expand its emergency department near its Center for Care and Discovery hospital and renovate Mitchell Hospital into a dedicated cancer facility. The project seeks to increase the medical center's number of hospital beds by 188, bringing the total to about 800.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board is slated to take up the medical center's expansion plan at its May 10 meeting.

In a report issued Tuesday, the board said the project is too costly and calls for too many new beds. The board said the proposal's costs exceed the state standard by $18 million.

U of C Medical Center President Sharon O'Keefe weighed in on the report, saying, in part, "We are encouraged to be one step closer to delivering the care our community wants and needs, and remain confident the Board will see the merits of our proposal to increase access to care on Chicago's South Side."
