Rolling Meadows Mayor Tom Rooney, a Republican, will fill the Illinois Senate seat being vacated by Matt Murphy (R-Palatine).
Murphy, a state Senator since 2006, announced last month he was leaving his legislative seat for the private sector.
Rooney secured Murphy's seat Thursday after three other candidates, including state Reps. Tom Morrison (R-Palatine) and David Harris (R-Arlington Heights) and Palatine Township GOP Committeeman Aaron Del Mar, withdrew from the running.
Rooney said he will soon vacate his position as Rolling Meadows mayor to become Illinois' 27th district senator.
